Science and Math Club
Eco twitter The Alverno Math and Science Club, includes the Astro Club, Ecology Club, and the Sign Language Club. The clubs meet weekly to have fun and and work on many projects, such as Ecology (Aquaponics, Water conservation, Native Plant gardens, Pond Ecosystem, Waste Reduction, Bat House Advocacy, Construction, and Installation, etc.), which are detailed on the Alverno Ecology Blog and Eco twitter in a presentation made to our Japanese School visitors.
In 2014-15, the Science Club , participated in International Water Day 2015, and received several awards, including the Grand Prize for 4 water-related projects such as Aquaponics, Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration, Native Plant Gardens,vand Storm Water Diversion and Rain Barrels.
In 2015-16, the Science Club, won the Battle of the Schools County-Wide Recycling Competition, for the first time, created a Pummel the Plastic campaign to reduce the use of disposable water bottles and replace them with refillable water bottles, hosted an e-waste drive to fund water bottle refill stations on campus, and received a signed commendation from Jane Goodall for completing several conservation projects. Science Club also expanded to include the Sign Language Club, to raise awareness of sign language and the integration of ASL into the classroom. The Science Club won the Battle of the Schools competition for the 4th time in a row in 2018-19.
In 2016-17, the Science Club expanded to include the Astro Club, to focus on Astro activities with the NRAO (National Radio Astronomy Observatory) in West Virginia and Caltech, building on the PSC and summer camp, the Ecology Club, and the Sign Language Club.
