Alverno iGEM Team - Synthetic Biology Research
About UsAlverno Heights Academy's iGEM 2016 team is made up of students who are passionate about science. The all-girl team ranges in age from 14 - 17 yrs old. Whether they are members of Alverno's Accelerated Honors Academy for Gifted Girls, or High School Seniors ready to go to college, their enthusiasm and curiosity are contagious.
Alverno girls are no strangers to research, and have participated in Caltech's Solar Army SEAL Team, Summer SEAL Research at Caltech, and individual research projects. They are enrolled in the summer course Honors Independent Research in Bioengineering, and during the school year are enrolled in Honors Independent Research in Science. Here is an overview presentation powerpoint summarizing the iGEM project.
Daily updates can be found on the team's social media. |
Alverno_CA iGEM2016 Team wins a Silver Medal! The Alverno iGEM Team received a silver medal at the prestigious iGEM International Science Competition, their first time participating! Teams, consisting of the top students from the top technical universities in the world, work through the summer on breakthrough science and engineering projects to make a contribution to the emerging field of synthetic biology. This is a high achievement, and even more so because most of the teams in this synthetic biology competition are undergraduates and overgraduates, with only a small percentage being high school teams. Alverno’s team made a splash with their foundational science project on understanding underlying mechanisms in DNA circuits, which sparked great interest in the scientists at the conference. They achieved a high level of excellence and were rewarded with a prestigious silver medal!

The team was also invited to participate in a Challenge on Experiment.com
The challenge was that if the team reached their pledge goal by August 17th, they will receive $1500 from Experiment.com (If they do not reach that goal they will receive nothing)
FINAL RESULT: The team was successful in raising the second highest number of sponsors in the iGEM challenge and received an additional $250 for a total of $2,120 Raised, which was 141% of the original target!
