PSC Capstone event @jpl/caltech
On Friday, June 2nd 2017, some Alverno students who participated in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory will visit Caltech and JPL for the PSC Capstone event, and make a presentation on the space-related activities they have participated in this year.
Some highlights are:
Some highlights are:
- Alverno students invited and were honored by a visit by Sue Finley (Rocket Girl) of JPL. Ms. Finley was a human computer in the 50's at JPL and works there today as an engineer.
- Honors Physics students made a video to celebrate the Human Computers of JPL:
- Students completed the assembly of the receiver circuit board for a small NASA RadioJove radio telescope at Alverno.
- 17 additional students were trained by other Alverno students in pulsar searching using the Green Bank Radio Telescope pulsar database.
- 4 students went to the PSC summer camp in 2017 to do research, and more will go this summer !
- Physics and Research students visited JPL and Griffith Observatory.
- Alverno students attended Stargazing and Lecture Series @Caltech and met science stars too :-)
alverno Astro history
Alverno Astro was formed in Spring 2016. The first project was to explore pulsars as part of the Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC).
The Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC) is a joint project, between the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and West Virginia University (WVU), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The goal of the PSC is to give high school students experience doing real research. With this experience they gain the confidence they need to succeed in STEM majors in college.
Students use data from the telescope to search for pulsars, with the support of astrophysicists and students from Caltech and JPL, and participated in a week-long summer camp!
Alverno Astro will be a club (Ad Astra) in 2016-17, including weekly meetings on Thursday after school 2:45 - 4:00 pm in Rm 114, to do PSC, building a radio telescope, field trips, and excursions to Caltech and JPL for lectures and activities.
